Susan Ryan Jordan about the Heal Breast Cancer Awards & Gala 2007

The Awards and Gala Event was, for me, “marvelous”. It was an evening that filled me with surprise and wonder. As a breast cancer survivor of almost thirty years, I believe that the work that the Heal Breast Cancer Foundation is of profound importance at a prescient time.

One of the Research Projects for the Foundation is to study the link between Specific Traumatic Life Events, Specific Emotional Conflicts and breast cancer. I have long believed, based on my own experience with breast cancer that such a link exists. I suffered a series of severe emotional losses (death and divorce) two years before I was diagnosed. I believe that the way in which I reacted to those losses was what led to a breakdown between my mind, my spirit and my body. I wrote about these experiences in my book, The Immune Spirit.

While loss happens to everyone, not everyone reacts hopelessly to the events as I did. I think it is important to understand the personality type that reacts to loss in a despairing way.  I was a person who outside myself, for others, not securely within myself. When these losses occurred (death and divorce) I thought I had no more reason to live. Oh, the things I’ve learned in the 28 years since I overcame breast cancer! I’ve learned to live within – for myself. I’ve learned to use the power of my own will to live.

I felt so honored, not only by the Award for my book from the Heal Breast Cancer Foundation, but to actually be able to thank Dr. Carl Simonton in person. Many years ago, when I was diagnosed, I was given his book to read.  It was there that I learned about how to look within and how to heal myself. I am very proud to give testimony to his beliefs and his writings.

The Gala will remain one of the most memorable and important experiences of my life. I’m proud to make a contribution to the work the Heal Breast Cancer Foundation is doing. That the Foundation is devoted to understanding the ways in which mind, body and spirit work together, that every thought affects the body, that those thoughts can hurt or heal, is the key to breast cancer prevention. Understand the person and you understand this illness.
